Subscribed Then subscribe Lack of Abstract Reasoning 1 They struggle with or entirely cannot comprehend What If hypotheticals. Hypothetical thinking requires a person to mentally simulate a reality that does not exist. People with intellectual limitations often operate purely in the concrete, literal present. They cannot temporarily suspend reality to play out a scenario. They struggle with "what if" questions because their brain treats the factual absence of the premise as a hard stop When on a date (if you are a girl) or when meeting a new friend if it a good mental test to ask a silly question like if you could have one super power what would you choose and why? Anyone that chooses invisibility is a pervert. It doesn’t matter what they pick so long as they are able to explore what they could do with it. That requires both abstract reasoning and imagination. A smart person will also recognize the downsides of a power too and ask for qualifiers.
2 They do not understand scale. Data doesn’t work on them, or the need to be right is so strong that they will cling to anecdotal evidence because it is the only thing supporting their side. Differentiating between a rare, isolated event and a statistically significant trend. If someone can not understand scale jut walk away. Generalities and probabilities fall of deaf ears. 3 Macro vs Nuance They view the world in strict binary categories. A person is either entirely "good" or entirely "bad." A rule is either always right or always wrong, with no room for context or exceptions. They also make binary beliefs, so for example if you dont like a political candidate then that must mean you love the other party. Or if you support a candidate you dont like only because the other one is worse, they think you endorse everything that person does. 4 Zero Systematic Interconnectedness Understanding that changing one variable in a complex system can trigger a domino effect of unintended consequences. They focus entirely on the immediate, visible outcome and miss the secondary effects.
For example. Demanding a business lower its prices by half to help customers, without realizing that doing so could bankrupt the company and cause everyone to lose their jobs. 5 Correlation vs. Causation Recognizing that just because two events happen at the same time does not mean one caused the other. If I bang on a pot with a spoon all night eh sun will rise, every time. 6 No Theory of Mind Understanding that other people possess different knowledge, motivations, feelings, and backgrounds than they do 7 No Delayed Gratification 8 Authority vs. Expertise, they dont know the difference 9 The Dunning-Kruger Effect Because they lack the baseline knowledge to see a subject's complexity, they assume the subject is incredibly simple and that they have completely mastered it. 10 Conditional Rules are lost on them Understanding that a rule or permission only applies if certain specific criteria are met first.
